The beach in Maruja

The picture above was taken the first day we were on Cardoso island. There was a beach about 2 minutes walking time from where we were stationed. You could literally see about 5 miles down the beach in the direction the camera is pointing, and about 1 1/2 mile the other direction. We had the whole beach to ourselves too. Im the guy standing in the brown shirt, camo pants, red All Star sneakers, and kaki army hat. The others that you see in this picture are (from right to left, starting with the guy in the red shirt) Kurt, Carmen, Ranulfo, Jack (red cap), me, Keith (you can barely see his face), and Jody (black shirt). Klaus isnt in this picture because he was behind the camera, and the head researcher, Tim, was setting up our arrangements with the villagers.

Butterfly

This is just an example of the kind of beauty we encountered while down there. This picture was taken by one of the expedition members on our only day off. There were several types of butterflies ranging from the green one you see above, to yellow and blue as well.

Hiking to a river in Cambriu

The above picture was taken one morning while in Cambriu. Thats me in front with the two machetes sticking out of the pack. The word for knife in Portuguese is FACA, (with the letter C pronounced as a K) and we liked to call the machetes BIG FACAS! Anyway, the guy with the big pole (GPS) is the head researcher Tim Moulten. The guy in the white shorts behind Tim is Jody, and then Jack (red cap) is bringing up the rear.
